I'm just curious why you say this vs. other cloud offerings. The thing that
I keep going back to in my head is that this may just happen again, at
which point we're back where we started.

Maybe now that GAE is out of beta it'll be more stable and they'll be more
responsive with bug fixes, but if nothing else this points out the big
issue with vendor lockin.

Also I haven't checked since they went out of beta and changed the pricing
model, but are there still free options?

I'm honestly looking for people's thoughts on this because as Alan has said
it's a significant effort, and if Google continues to change and break
things frequently it's a lot of time spent chasing our tails generating a
lot of angry users in the process.
