Anwering my own question, I think this has something todo with master and slave
IBSS. I think the WG311 can operate in slave IBSS only. Anyway, ditched the
Netgear and got an el-cheapo Ralink RT2661 based card (ral).
It's an Eminent EM4467. Thought I should mention this here, since it wasn't in
the man ral card summary. Runs like a charm, and no need for a separate
firmware pkg_add. Great.
Also the warning in man ral about requiring strict PCI 2.2 does not seem to be
a problem. Use it in a PCI 2.1 box, but of course don't know why this was
mentioned. I don't use the power management, the most significant addition to
the 2.2 spec.
