the file I am talking about is:
ca-bundle.crt
This file has loads of root keys in it. I found that I had to add my CA root key to the end of the file. Apache then can trust the client certs that are being presented. I deleted all the certs I did not want to there are only two certs in this file on my servers.
Chris, DON'T do that. You need the root certs NOT the private keys. Don't attach the CA's private root key to your apache config! This would be really dangerous.
