Highly interesting -- I haven't been able to make that work. I tried
to use <type>none</type> for my CA node[*], but then no role was found
and an error was triggered. So I changed it back to the default which
worked at my installation.
Did you change something at <acl_config>, too?

I use 0.9.3-rc1 on SUSE 10.0, and made it myself from source that I
downloaded from the SourceForge file download area. (I was not able to
do a CVS checkout, and a respective question on openca-devel has not
been answered yet.)
ml> you did nothing special? maybe my system is just misconfigured...
I did no further configuration -- as I wrote above, I tried but that
did not work out and I didn't had time to look at it in more depth.
Best,
Joachim
[*] It is highly annoying that the realm in CGI::Session is set wrong
and therefore re-authentication is always demanded when one switches
from CA or RA to node interface. I wanted to get rid of that for at
least the CA, where one sits at the console anyhow and that
authentication suffices. Well, maybe I'll go for client certs, too.
