We use autoconf/automake, which means that configure is generated by autoconf. When one distributes the package the configure script is pre-generated such that people don't need autoconf anymore, but it isn't present in the source tree. The one you got is left behind from the earlier checkout. Please try: git checkout tags/2.1.6 sh autogen.sh ./configure ...
