A bit more followup: we may have narrowed the Sun problem down to Tube barfing on a 270-member series of fields containing short "arcs" of only 2-5 vertices each (output of gis2dx). I've asked him to bypass Tube (using a vein from his leg) and see if the disconnecting server stays up. If so, I can probably simplify the arc object somehow.
