What is legally accepted?
Is it a setup we should have at the company because in some
countries it is allowed/permitted and not in others?
+1
it's just important to print for negative numbers the minus sign - I
do not recall exactly - there was an issue the minus sign was not
printed
eg: in China it is common practice to have negative amount in
accounting moves (Storno accounting) like many former/still ;)
communist countries.

Hi negative lines is a good feature in OpenERP it allow solves many
cases in accounting but always with positive lines too, however negative
total invoice must not allowed, it complicate the concepts in
accounting.
I consider a possible solution:
* Allow negative lines.
* Dont allow negative total invoice.
My 2 cents.
