In production I have a 9550SX-16ML with 500GB Seagates with 8xR5 and 8xR10
and the R5 volume performance is exponentially higher than an 8506-8 in R5
with the same drives when used in typical file-server usage on windows.

The 8605-8 with 8x250GB WD2500JB drives in R5 under Centos 4 has approx
10-12% less throughput performance on a g-E network running a Samba server
than the same system running Windows but it's multiple-hit performance seems
on par with the Windows with little perceivable difference.

For my personal OF System at home, I have a 7506-12 (purchased on eBay for
$219 shipped) with 11x200GB Segates (I tried all 12 originally but the card
only supports volumes up to 2TB so now the 12th is a hot spare) and
performance seems on par with the 8506-8 system.

In general, the 3ware cards don't seem super quick, but they certainly are
very solid. The 9550SX series is a vast improvement over previous cards in
a multi-client environment.

All these systems, both windows and linux, use a 36GB partition on the R5
volume as boot. Windows required loading a driver on install while none of
the Linux 2.6-based OS's needed any manual driver tweaking.
