Horst: I was not clear enough:
We are entertaining the idea of scanning medical records that we are copying
for other purposes anyway.
Thinking to the future, I thought that we should likely create some sort of
meaningful file structure for these scanned records: one that is a) HIPAA
compliant b) user friendly c) less likely to become obsolete d) inexpensive
e) linkable to future EMR implementation...

Scanimage can scan straight into tiff format, output to stdout, so you can
intercept it in your own application and do with it whatever you like, or
just redirect it into a file.
