Both OpenIndiana and BSD are true unix operating systems, whose roots trace back to the original AT&T Unix. Linux in contrast, was created from scratch to provide a free and open source alternative to Minix, which at the time, was licensed for educational uses only.

The Linux origin as relates to Minix seems completely irrelevant now. Linux was clearly inspired/guided more by SunOS in its development than it was by Minix. Minix was merely the OS that Linus was playing with prior to starting Linux.

The fact that Linux started from scratch is important.
