thank you for that information.  i have one more question hopefully that 
could be answered:

There is "Drv Stat" and "Drv Pres", and the values "ipmitool sensor" returns
For Drives that are present:
Drv Stat: 0x008e
Drv Pres: 0x0280

and for that are not present:
Drv Stat: 0x0080
Drv Pres: 0x0080

does not seem to much the sensor specific offsets in the doc.

and if i run "ipmitool -v sensor", the only states that are asserted is:
Sensor ID              : Drv 1 Pres (0x9)
 Entity ID             : 15.1
 Sensor Type (Discrete): Drive Slot / Bay
 States Asserted       : Availability State
                         [Device Present]


am i suppose to mask values, or somehow do some bit operations on the 
status values that are returned?
