I think the null check is in line with the rest of the method as it checks for 
cc != null later down for other types of events. I think instantly returning 
would not reset the click counters, which is also probably not the best 
solution. This null check is the most minimally invasive solution I can see.

About why this happening, I guess that is a different thing to figure out. 
Looking at the related issue, it seems like a parent window can receive events 
from other windows under certain conditions. Maybe if you manage to click the 
split second a popup is shown / hidden, it can happen somehow
