I agree with @mstr2. 
When I did read the message that this is unlikely to get merged or moved on, I 
was really wondering why.
This is an improvement that many people on the mailing list have been asking 
for. We should not ignore that IMO.

I understand any concerns really, but on the hand we also need to decide and 
discuss together.

Not saying we should merge anything, but I would rather like to see us working 
together and may make this a change we are all confident in, tested with 
various application (and I think that together we have access to a wide variety 
of applications). All that should help to find a solution with minimal risk 
while still improving things.
