Andy was trying to be helpful by commenting on what he and I discussed offline, but I hadn't had time to reply to. I'm sure it was not his intent to shut down the discussion nor present this as an official declaration. Having said that, I agree with the essence of the statement that this PR is unlikely to be accepted in its current form: For compatibility reasons, we usually avoid changing default behavior unless the current behavior is clearly buggy. In this case, it is very likely that some people will find the proposed changes subjectively better for many cases. It is also likely that others may find it subjectively worse, or that there are situations where it would be considered worse even by the people that find it better in most cases. If this turns out to be the case, then we would not want to change the default, but would rather provide settings to allow applications to opt it (either via API or more likely a system property). Either way, we should continue to discuss, publicly, the implications of changing this. It would be helpful to hear from Phil who has a _lot_ of experience in this area in Swing. ------------- PR Comment: https://git.openjdk.org/jfx/pull/2284#issuecomment-5623831448
