I know you don't like it Tim, but I'm tending to agree that we should be translating full strings and therefore the source for these would have to go in the plugins.
Attempting to do substitutions, as well as it may work for some languages, is likely to bite us in the future when someone comes along with a language type which we haven't hit before. You know how the Open Source community likes doing obscure things with Klingon or Pirate.
