Do you have an example of when it happens and how? I'd prefer to fix
it now (if auto-discovery is possible at all) as it should be fairly
doable keeping the current architecture.

Looks proper to me, let's hear what the others will say. Do
proprietary debuggers also require manual settings for AP numbers? I
think I've seen some "peedi" configs having that, so I guess OpenOCD
should get same facilities.
