For this reason, right now it is true that FTDI D2xx driver is still better.
On the other hand, as per the GPL discussion in this list last time, it
is not allowed to redistribute openocd_d2xx. So it is a problem for end
users who do not want to build OpenOCD by their own.

So Freddie's libftdi based OpenOCD under Windows will still be popular. ;-)

BTW, I personally tend to not agree with the assertion that dynamically
linking to ftd2xx.dll violates GPL, Many others like Freddie and even the
original author do not agree with that assertion either. But that is an
issue probably only lawyers can solve.
