AINAL, but I think the short answer is that as long as you
don't distribute binaries, you can do whatever you want,
including keeping the code private and secret and using
whatever protocols you want. You can probably also distribute
source code to your hearts content.

If you want to distribute binaries, then that's another matter
entirely.

If you want the community to accept your patch, then not only
do you need to pass all the "GPL hurdles", but the community
must be comfortable maintaining your patches and you'll probably
have to do all the work and then some.

Someone more versed in GPL can probably elaborate.
