Thanks to Carlos Henrique Bauer, who supplied me with two patches against 
latest SVN version of OpenCT, everything seems to work fine now.

which version of openct are you using?
did you compile it yourself or are you using some debian package?
which version of debian are you using? stable, unstable, testing?
is that a normal x86 machine or some other architecture?
