CardOS formatted with OpenSC let the Life cycle in Administrative mode. 
This is not really important, but just a good sign.

You certainly don't need to format the card (you will loose all the 
content of the card...). But if the card is not formatted with OpenSC 
tools, you have no garanties that it will work with OpenSC, unless this 
is clearly documented by your provider. If not, ask for a pkcs11 module.

I can confirm you that the CardOS 4.3B works perfectly with OpenSC on a 
MacIntel running 10.5.7 (if the the card is formatted with OpenSC's 
pkcs15-init) ;-)
