last time I tried vc8 [1] and vc9 worked (tested vc8 quite recently, vc9
a little while ago), I guess they are considered to be the ones that are
supported, i.e. if they don't work it's a bug.
I have not tried other compilers, but perhaps someone is motivated to
give it a try?
