I have the exact same problem - no sound for video or audio preview. I have UI sounds for menus, etc. But nothing for any format video or audio clip I've imported (avi, mpeg, mp3, wav).
When I export the project the sound is there, everything is synced and looks/sounds great. I'm running UbuntuStudio 9.10 32bit with Pulseaudio removed (only ALSA for audio).
