I just checked on the Ubuntu package list (http://packages.ubuntu.com/fi/karmic/libsdl1.2debian-pulseaudio) and it states "This version of SDL is compiled with X11 graphics and PulseAudio sound." which indicates that it is PulseAudio dependent, not optional :(
