I agree that adding the ability to purge stale kstats - in some form, maybe more than one - would be better than banning persistent kstats. In my experience, "interesting" devices don't necessarily stay "busy" all the time, and the DEBUG kernel quite aggressively detaches non-busy drivers (effectively doing 'modunload -i 0' every 60 seconds).
