First it would be handy to know which version of X you use. Xsun or Xorg. I don't know which driver Sun ships with X.org for Solaris, and things might have changed, but it used to be the case that for DVI output one needed a proprietary binary component added to the Matrox driver, the socalled MGA HAL. Why the installation went ok might be explained by the installer using a VESA driver for X, which generally works. Maybe someone in the know can elaborate on that.
