The problem is the installation routine does not recognize many ethernet
cards that are on the Solaris HCL. Perhaps Alan (DuBoff) would care to
comment (this issue was mentioned in his Solaris Installation Guide)?

Wayne,
if the installer does not recognise a device is listed on the Sun-supplied
and Sun-tested HCL, then that's an issue which must be fixed.

There is a lot of hardware on the HCL which is not tested by Sun, but it
still works quite happily. Some fooling around is required though in order
to get it to work -- eg, my Via RHine laptop ethernet -- I keep a copy of
Murayama's driver on a usb key for the times when I do a fresh install. The
hardware works just fine with Solaris (and iirc it's on the HCL), it's just
not in the basic list of hardware that the installer recognises because it's
not part of Sun's certified list.

Please don't confuse Sun certified with 'works with Solaris' -- they are
actually two separate things.
