Proposal to start new project on Streaming Server
--------------------------------------------------
I'd like to propose starting a new OpenSolaris project on the Streaming Server. The Sun StorEdge Media Central Streaming Server (<http://www.sun.com/products-n-solutions/hardware/docs/pdf/806-4868-10.pdf>) will form the basis for the Streaming Server project.

In August, 2005 Sun launched the Open Media Commons initiative (<http://www.openmediacommons.org/documentation.html>). The Sun StorEdge Media Central Streaming Server project is one of the technologies that Sun committed to providing as an open source project.

The Sun StorEdge Media Central Streaming Server is designed to serve standards-compliant media streams (audio/video) over IP using open-standard protocols such as RTP (Real Time Transport Protocol) & [Real Time Streaming Protocol.  It will be compliant with the 3GPP [The 3rd Generation Partnership Project] and ISMA [Internet Streaming Media Alliance ] specifications. While the server is agnostic to format the media, the streams served by SSS are generally encoded using the MPEG-4 codecs. It supports MPEG-4 and QuickTime out of the box.

Thanks
