I actually had the same problem. The machine I was installing on to had a plain CD-ROM drive. I used an external USB drive to burn CDRW's. I could mount and read the CDRW's I burned in the drive just fine but for some reason the install didn't like them. I replaced the drive with an old CDRW drive and the problem went away. I have no explanation why the install didn't like my CDRW's or even a guess but I had a work around.
