When I think of SMC, the first thing I think about is the Java GUI and the server listening on port 898. To be quite honest, not my idea of fun. And it doesn't help that Java's widget toolkit leaves a lot to be desired in terms of looking appealing. That of course has nothing to do with usability, but I never got anywhere with SMC in that dept. either. > What can we do (other than the performance issue) to > improve SMC so that > "hardcore CLI junkies" and "pointy clickies" would > both like it ? That is an excellent question, and you're to be commended for it. How do you marry two opposite approaches to getting a task done? I think I really am the wrong guy to ask. Take for example the first thing I do when configuring a system - any system, SPARC, i86pc, desktop, server, whatever; it doesn't matter. What do I do? Redirect the console output to ttya and hook the system up to an RSM. Keyboard? Monitor? Why'd I ever want to, when there's an ALOM, which is just the best thing since sliced bread! The basic problem is this: to be effective, a UI of some sort must be extremely comprehensive, i.e. one must be able to do absolutely everything normally achievable through the CLI. But in practice, most GUIs offer basic to moderate levels of functionality; any advanced or "out of the ordinary" stuff is usually only available if you have a go at a CLI with a pair of pliers and a blowtorch. So for guys like me, it's gonna be tough to come up with a GUI optimized for a serial line. Would you agree, or do you see that differently?
