In which case you have to update each application. In which case you might as well update them to emit an enumerated event rather than a string. In which case you're looking at SNMP or some other protocol. ;)
(In which case you'd have to ask, why /aren't/ those applications already using SNMP or somesuch for those messages? Perhaps whatever value logging has lies precisely in its /lack/ of structure..)
