That kind of Polaris_2.11 down to Solaris_2.5.1/2.6ppc backward compatibility 
would certainly be nice (would also allow us to run things like WABI_2.2d for 
example).
But unfortunately is it a no go: 2.5.1/2.6beta had been running the ppc cpu in 
LSB mode (except a Sun-Labs internal MSB port [non-public study]).
The ongoing Polaris port will run the ppc cpu in MSB byte-order (early design 
decision / offers the obvious benefits over LSB).

Note: 
sparc is MSB
x86 is LSB
ppc can be booted into into either MSB xor LSB mode.
