Wow, my first Sun[tm] was a 3/80. > the only way I can dive into OpenSolaris myself is to run it on my own > workstation, therefore my criteria to qualify the "Perfect" OpenSolaris True. > What are reasonable choices these days for a very fast OpenSolaris > workstation? Sun Ultra 40, Ultra 45? Dual/Quad Woodcrest or Dual/Quad For workstation-type things, if absolute speed is your goal, then I don't think you can do better than a loaded Ultra 40. I have a loaded Ultra 20, it is very fast! > AMD64 or maybe Dual Sparc (I understand that crosscompilation will be > available soon?) please let me know, and if you do already own such Not ETA for cross-compilation, so don't hold your breath! The main question is: what architecture do you want/need: SPARC, or x86? If SPARC is what you're after then the ULtra 45 is the way to go, otherwise go for the Ultra 40. > screamer, please let me know how long it takes to compile an > OpenSolaris build on your box. The only metric I have first hand is how long it took to compile build 17 on my Acer Ferrari 3400 laptop: about 90 minutes (it's been a while since I built the OpenSOlaris source code, as I prefer to download Solaris Express Community Release DVD ISOs instead).
