There is also a Dennis Clarke scale which consists of some hardline blatant opinions and rants. While I hear that AMD Opterons are real real quick, and I must say that they are, I am of the _opinion_ that programmers[1] have not yet caught up to the capabilities of the UltraSparc T1 processor. If we want to do a quick count of registers that are available on the high speed internal bus of the chip then I think that the UltraSparc is in the heavyweight class and all other chips on the market stand in its shadow. IBM is in the process of making threats about a new super killer Power processor but, much like the Itanium, it doesn't seem to be shipping. I can not actually put my hands on it or even code a single NOP on it. Why? Because it doesn't bloody exist. Thats why. I have a DEC Alpha 21164 server here in my life these days and it was a real killer machine in its day. I think that the AMD Opteron has some brilliance due to the same engineers and scientists that worked on the DEC Alpha. Its a thing of beauty that Opteron, no doubt. But compared to the UltraSparc T1 ? I think the UltraSparc T1 can run circles around just about anything on the market. As soon as I get my hands on one of them I'll be sure to prove it with some slick assembly. Anyways ... thats my opinion. Dennis [1] or compilers. Studio 11 looks to be really near perfect. Near. _______________________________________________ opensolaris-discuss mailing list [email protected]
