Actually, no, it is not, I just haven't gone in depth here, since this is not 
the place for it.

One of the first things that occurred to me as I started thinking about the 
issues and this problem is that what you describe might happen; but that is 
really a discussion for the "installation & packaging" forum, and it also 
warrants a formal proposal.

The crux is at my statement that I have to think about it some more and think 
it through very carefully so as not to break compatibility, yet provide the 
features if/when they are needed.

I have some clear ideas, but until I'm ready to step forward, I'm holding off 
on those.
