vipw IIRC has been fixed already.

called ? RFE ? ) thing filed to allow /root to be the home for root by
default.
Yes there is an approved ARC case. I was the submitter.
The only reason that this has not been integrated yet is due to the fact
that some, currently internal only, test suites used for testing Solaris
are believed to break because they assume that root's home dir is '/'
and never anything else.
Once those are fixed then the change will get integrated.
