Why? Sun isn't equipped to accept donations, either; it's a
for-profit corporation. Nor does Sun own or control the OpenSolaris
community; the Charter and Constitution make that very clear. If
someone wanted to enter into a business arrangement with Sun, they'd
contact Sun. If they wanted to donate something to the OpenSolaris
community as a whole, they don't really have anywhere to go,
especially if whatever they want to do can't be considered part of the
cost of running their own business.
Please give an example of such a donation "to the OpenSolaris community as
a while".
I can't think of one real world example that could not be accommodated
within the constraints of the OpenSolaris project, or could not be
accommodated with Sun. (Perhaps requiring a bit of creativity on the donors
side.)
I'd say, "let's cross this bridge when we come to it." or, "let's not put
the cart before the horse".
(Keep in mind any monetary donation below $100,000-$250,000, would probably
not be significant, if you compare it to the amount of resources Sun is
pouring into the project. (I came up with the range, as an estimation of how
much the annual cost of a world class developer, including office space,
communications costs, etc.)
Do we need to include OGB in this discussion?
