Probably best to tell us what you have. If it is a camera, make sure it can do both PTP and disk mode - PTP mode works well with my HP M307 so it might work 'out of the box' with GTKam. Regarding mp3 player, what brand/model is it? As for applications - depends, what do you want/need - wine works pretty well out of the box, download and compile with gcc without any problems (from my experience).
