Note that experimtal changes are extremely important and that I think
we're not doing enough of the experimenting bits (and this is pretty
hard to do for a wide audience because experiments are bound to fail
in some cases)

Which is why change for change sake is wrong and thorough analysis is
needed to determine what changes are really needed.

And the best way to get into religious wars is to make changes to
certain defaults which some people like and some do not.

Existing users will often just use their existing config files and perhaps
see no changes, but changing defaults may also break their environment
and this is a fine line.

I want to be all inclusive: but specifically include old users AND newcomers.

To add to the religious wars :-) "No colorls, please!"
