Ah shoot, I just read that you already tried Milax and had a problem with it 
not being based on IPS. I guess you could look around at the other distros that 
are out there and see if you find anything you like. I think Belenix also 
supports the XFCE desktop, which should make things run faster with less memory 
and cpu utilization:

I personally think Milax is pretty stable and you can install stuff from 
blastwave or compile it from source to get wharever you need.

I think some of the code from Milax should probably be integrated upstream into 
the main OpenSolaris Project Indiana so that people can choose to use either 
the GNOME or XFCE desktop environment.
