Yeah I am not sure either. Perhaps in the network panel of System preferences 
you might want to add 'local' to the search domain and re-try.

dns-sd -Q runs a long-running query so it does not exit unless there is an 
error and you have to terminate manually.
If you are able to resolve .local hostnames from the OpenSolaris machine then 
you should check the configuration
on the Mac.
