coitran , the window manager metacity is not running. Same thing happened to me. The workaround is to start an xterm or gnome terminal and type the folloing in it:
/bin/metacity --replace & This will start the window manager and give you the bells and whistles. I even put the command in a desktop icon: [Desktop Entry] Encoding=UTF-8 Version=1.0 Type=Application Terminal=false Name[C]=metacity Exec=/bin/metacity --replace & Name=metacity Click on the icon (called metacity) and the wm runs.
