Well remember it's just rumor and speculation at this point. ROCK obviously has
features that would be of huge interest to Oracle and to customers looking to
consolidate servers and scale up. I would rather assume that the SuperNova
servers that the ROCK processor is designed for probably need some reworking as
technology changes soo fast that last years ideas are outdated. So who knows
for now. But if it were going to be canceled, it's more likely to be due to the
8-core SPARC64 Venus processors that will apparently do 128GFlops per socket
out performing ROCK.

As for the next gen Niagara processor, I doubt that would be dropped as CMT is
the cash cow for Sun when it comes to volume servers. If anything, greater
emphasis is on the delivery of the UltraSPARC-KT (Niagara 3) processor than
anything else.

Overall, it's disappointing about the SPARC workstations going away. But I
doubt the server end will go away as Sun makes most of its server revenue from
CMT today.

SPARC?

So first workstations and now servers too. Pity, but it seems such is life in
the server domain in a sign of consolidation...
