Everybody needs to check this out:

To put it mildly, OpenSolaris 2009.06 didn't just beat Ubuntu 9.04 in the Java
2D Microbenchmark test, this was total annihilation!!! 2009.06 performed at
least twenty times better than Ubuntu 9.04 did in the Java 2D Microbenchmark
v1.0 Vector Graphics competition. This was very surprising for me to read as
I'm used to Ubuntu doing much better than OpenSolaris in all of these phoronix
test suite articles (I always chalked it up to the test suites being compiled
with a newer version of gcc on Ubuntu and to gcc compiler being optimized for
GNU/Linux in the same way that I assume Sun Studio is optimized for Solaris).

Everyone in who works on graphics engineering for OpenSolaris should get a
cookie (maybe give Alan Coopersmith a trophy), although I suspect the bad Linux
performance might be caused by the Linux devs shooting themselves in the foot
with their unstable device driver issues again (the unstable DDI in Linux is
actually one of the main things that has been driving me away from Linux and
more towards OpenSolaris).

I'm still keeping Ubuntu as my primary leisure-use desktop at home though
because I need easy access to things like VLC Media Player and a stable version
of Wine that doesn't dump core every time I click on the sound tab in winecfg
like my 2008.11 Wine package does, but I thought everyone here would enjoy
being on the winning side of a Phoronix performance benchmark article for a
change.
