I'm guessing that some of my misery with getting Wine working is due to the fact that I'm still on OpenSolaris 2008.11 for my main desktop and need to upgrade to a newer version (i.e. 2009.06) to get things working. Packet Tracer uses a lot of audio / sound and it's safe to say that audio / sound isn't working for me in 2008.11 because I get a massive core dump that starts off like what I've copied and pasted below every time I click on the audio tab in winecfg:
