Note that the GDM service depends on other services such as fc-cache,
utmpx, hal, and D-Bus. Can you check if GDM slow to start because
the GDM service is slow to startup, or is the problem because some
service GDM depends on is slow to startup?

If the problem is GDM, you could try editing /usr/share/gdm/defaults.conf and set "Enable=true" in the "[debug]"
section. Then restart GDM. It will then send debug spew to
/var/adm/messages with timestamps. That might help to clarify where
the hang is happening.

Do you happen to have your computer configured to access login
information over the network, so that you can login via NIS when
connected to the network? If so, and if you have the Face Browser
turned on (and the IncludeAll configuration option turned on), then
this could also cause this sort of hanging problem.

hello all,
this is a very annoying problem. My laptop is configured with nwam, so everything works fine when network is available. But in case of lack of network (no cable or no valid wifi), gdm doesn't start because ntp prevents many services to start!
is it normal?
the workarounds are:
- wait for several minutes, not very friendly, because, thanks to power management, i reboot the laptop only to test something and don't want to wait - disable ntp, disable multi-user, enable multi-user, wait for gdm to start, log in, then re-enable ntp!

what am i missing?

thanks
