Hi,
I think it's great that you're giving OpenSolaris a try! By default,
'root' is a role, not a user, so I'm guessing you're not set up to log
in to root directly. However, you should be able to use "pfexec" or "su"
to act as root when logged in as your normal user.
Now as for getting stuck in the text console, that shouldn't be
happening. Are you running the latest release build, or a development
build (what's the output of 'uname -a'?). Also, what's the output of
'svcs -xv'? I suppose it's possible that this is bug 11313
(http://defect.opensolaris.org/bz/show_bug.cgi?id=11313) though the
comments indicate that 11313 is isolated to remote sessions...
