Update: I tried again with a fresh Live CD of 2010.02 build 123 with the same result. I tried a few random kernel flags (where is the documentation for these?) and managed to slow it down enough to take a couple of pictures with my camera. The whole thing from losing the blue screen with dots, to a reboot, takes about 5 seconds.
