OK I've fixed it now!

I tried taking out the intel network card and replacing the original PCI 
graphics card with a PCI-e card - and it booted up fine!

So I put the network card and tried a [i]different[/i] PCI graphics card, and 
it still booted up OK.

So that was the solution.

The original graphics card was a PNY 8400 GS (that didn't work), and the one 
that works is a PNY 6200.

They are pretty similar - so I wonder what broke in the 8400...
