The actual binary that starts Compiz is called 'compiz.real' in Ubuntu.
What you start with 'compiz' is a script that takes care of everything for you.
It has mainly been written due to the fact that if you build Compiz from 
source, you will have to run it with certain extensions. For example, when 
compiling from git, I used to run Compiz like this:

LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1 compiz --replace --indirect-rendering --sm-disable 
--ignore-desktop-hints ccp "
