Always assumed a chain of disk for one side of the mirror on one 
card/controller, the other side on a different card/controller.
One card dies and you can work with half of the mirror.
Could always be wrong :-)

For home use the first thing I always do with a motherboard is to disable any 
RAID controller.

There is however one thing that puzzles me, when browsing through the zfsadmin 
guide:

On page 47:
"If you create a mirrored disk configuration, multiple controllers are 
recommended."

What do they mean by (multiple) controllers?
